Florence
represents the central economic, recreational, and cultural hub of the Pee
Dee Region. Florence is located 60 miles west of the coastline and is the
main gateway to Myrtle Beach and South Carolina's Grand Strand. Florence is
at the intersection of I-95 and I-20 for traveling convenience. Florence has many attractions to boast about including the Columns, which is the last working plantation in the area, museums, and various festivals and events. Florence is also known for its meeting and convention facilities, which include the Florence City-County Civic Center. Sports enthusiasts enjoy the Freedom Florence Recreational Complex, Pee Dee Pride Hockey, golf, tennis, bowling, hunting and fishing. The Columns Plantation — This 1500 acre mid-19th Century plantation is still operated by the owners. The home is an excellent example of Antebellum styled Greek Revival architecture that was so popular in that period. Located at 5027 East Old Marion Highway (off Williamson Road), tours are available but must be arranged with the owners. Phone 843-669-6730. (no website) |
Florence Museum — A small but very interesting museum that seems to have a little bit of everything. Chinese, African, Greek, Roman and even some American art are on display. But, perhaps more interesting, is the building — a 1939 art deco private home. The address in 558 Spruce Street. It is adjacent to Timrod Park which is off Graham Street. Open 10a to 5p every day except Monday (Sunday afternoons only). $1. 843-662-3351Florence National Cemetery — Originally a cemetery for Union prisoners-of-war who died in the nearby Florence Stockade, it has been expanded to include veterans from every conflict since. Located at 803 East National Cemetery Road in Florence. 843-669-8783.War between the States Museum — This small museum at 107 South Guerry Street is dedicated to the display of Civil War artifacts, — especially relating to the Florence Stockade where Union Army prisoners-of-war were incarcerated. Also on display are some artifacts from the old Confederate Navy Yard (on the Pee Dee River). Especially interesting to people with ancestral ties to the area is the Ancestor Wall where photos, etc., of Civil War veterans from this area are displayed. Open Wednesdays and Saturdays only (10a - 5p). 843-669-1266. |
